As a rule of thumb, 1 BTU covers roughly 1/40th of a square foot in open outdoor air, though wind and open sides reduce effective coverage. A 48,000 BTU heater rated for 200 sq. ft. suits a single patio table or small seating area; a 48,000 BTU pyramid-style heater rated up to 1,000 sq. ft. is designed for larger, more open spaces since its heat radiates from a taller column.

Freestanding vs. pyramid vs. tabletop?

Freestanding heaters (like our Mainstays and BALI OUTDOORS models) are the most common and easiest to reposition thanks to wheeled bases. Pyramid heaters add a glass flame column for ambiance and typically throw heat over a wider radius. Both styles require a standard 20 lb propane tank (sold separately in most listings).

What safety features should I look for?
